A baby girl was among six people rescued by firefighters after a suspicious blaze broke out in a cafe in West Lothian.

Two fire crews were sent to the incident at the Cappadocia Bistro on George Street, Bathgate, just after 8pm on Thursday after several reports that the property was well alight.

The 11 firefighters rescued a baby girl, two women and three men from the property.

They used two high pressure hose reels and four breathing apparatus to extinguish the blaze, which was brought under control by 11.18pm.

A spokeswoman for the fire service said that two crews from Bathgate had been sent to the incident, with support from a senior officer.

Inspector Drew Elliot of Bathgate police station said on Friday: "Our inquiries are at an early stage however we are treating this fire as suspicious.

"As such we are investigating all lines of inquiry and I urge anyone who saw or heard any suspicious activity in the area to contact police immediately.

"Fortunately no one was injured in this incident however a significant amount of damage was caused and parts of the building are currently uninhabitable.

"We will continue to work closely with our colleagues at the fire service as part of a joint investigation into the cause of the fire."
