A body has been recovered from Duddingston Loch in the search for a French student who went missing over five weeks ago.

Officers were called to Holyrood Park in Edinburgh on Friday after a member of the public raised the alarm at around 10.30am.

Police have informed the family of Edinburgh College student Antoine Maury, who was last seen near the loch after leaving friends on the night of October 24.

The area was cordoned off for several hours while police recovered the body.

A police spokeswoman said: "The discovery was reported to police around 10.30am on Friday. Enquiries are ongoing to establish the man's identity.

"The family of Antoine Maury have been informed of this development."

Mr Maury's disappearance prompted extensive searches, with dozens of volunteers turning out to support police and specialist search teams.

The student had recently moved to Edinburgh and had been staying in the college accommodation at Milton Road East.

His friends reported him missing after he left them suddenly at around 10.30pm on October 24.

Some of Mr Maury's belongings - including his hat, jumper, jacket and phone - were found near Holy Rood High a few days after his disappearance.
