A car was found abandoned on tram tracks in Edinburgh city centre.

The Vauxhall Zafira was discovered on the route at Haymarket sidings, close to the train station.

Police Scotland said they were alerted to the vehicle on the tracks at around 4.20am before it was removed at around 6am.

A spokesman said: "We are still investigating the full set of circumstances into how the vehicle ended up on the tracks and appeal to anyone with relevant information to come forward."

The operator of Edinburgh Trams said the incident did not cause any disruption.

A spokesman added: "This was obviously a very irresponsible act but thankfully no harm has resulted and we're grateful to the police for dealing with the situation so we could keep our vital services running smoothly."
