Thieves raided a jewellery shop after forcing their way through the wall of the barber shop next door.

Thousands of pounds worth of 18-carat diamond pendants and bracelets were snatched from the Theodore David Jewellers on Montagu Street in Goldenacre, Edinburgh.

They first forced their way into Botanic Barbers and made their way into a hidden alcove at the rear of the shop.

It is believed they used a crowbar, which was left at the scene, to break into the barbers before they broke through the interior wall between the shops.

The jewellery shop was closed at the time as owner Theodore David was on holiday.

He estimated at least several thousand pounds worth of jewellery had been taken, adding: "We put about 80% of the stock in the safe but of what was left on display whole areas have been cleared."

Barber Yilmaz Pamuk said the thieves had also taken five laptops from his shop.

He said: "It looks like they have used the same tool to break through the door, as they have to break through the wall.

"It was a big, thick, metal bar. They left it behind once they were finished."

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "Police in Edinburgh are investigating following a break-in at a jewellery store in Montagu Terrace.

"The incident happened around 3.15am on Sunday and officers are continuing to liaise with staff to establish what items, if any, were taken.

"Anyone with information that can assist with this investigation is asked to come forward."
