A body recovered from Duddingston Loch in Edinburgh has been identified as missing student Antoine Maury.

Police found the 21-year-old's body in Holyrood Park on December 2, five weeks after the French student was reported as missing.

Mr Maury's disappearance prompted extensive searches, with dozens of volunteers turning out to support police and specialist search teams.

The student had recently moved to Edinburgh and had been staying in the college accommodation at Milton Road East.

He was last seen near the loch after leaving friends on the night of October 24.

On Friday, police confirmed the body was Mr Maury. A report has now been sent to the procurator fiscal.

Chief inspector Kevin McLean, area commander for north east Edinburgh, said: "Our thoughts are with the family of Antione, whose courage and dignity throughout this harrowing time has been unparalleled.

"I would like to thank those members of the public and media who assisted in our search, their support was essential.

"We are supporting Antoine's family through an appointed family liaison officer. We will continue to work with them and offer assistance throughout this difficult time."
