Commuters are facing travel chaos across much of Scotland due to a safety inspection on the Forth Rail Bridge.

Engineers were carrying out the safety checks on Monday morning and cancellations and delays were expected until at least 8am.

Several services from Edinburgh to other parts of the country have been hit by major disruption as a result and ScotRail are urging passengers to check online for times.

Trains between Edinburgh and Dundee; Edinburgh and Kirkcaldy; Edinburgh and Perth; Edinburgh and Glenrothes as well as Thornton via Dunfermline Town were all affected.

The Edinburgh to Inverness Service was also affected.

The ScotRail website states: "Customers with valid tickets can travel on Stagecoach bus services for the routes between Inverkeithing and Glenrothes where bus services are operated by Stagecoach.

"Please present your ticket to the bus driver on joining bus services. Customers with valid tickets can travel on Lothian bus services for the routes between Dalmeny and Edinburgh where bus services are operated by Lothian buses.

"Please present your ticket to the bus driver on joining bus services. We apologise for the delay to your journey today.
