A street has been cordoned off after a hand grenade was found in the boot of a car.

The item, believed to be from the Second World War, was found on North Gyle Terrace in Edinburgh on Thursday.

The street was closed off to allow a bomb disposal team to recover the weapon.

A police spokesman said: "People were called to North Gyle Terrace at around 3.30pm this afternoon following a report of a hand grenade, believed to date back to the Second World War, in the boot of a car.

"A cordon and road closure are in place to ensure the safety of the public while the EOD work to dispose of the item continues.

"There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances."
