Motorists have been left confused after two different speed restrictions were painted on the same road.

A 20mph speed limit is to be introduced across Edinburgh over the next year, with some roads already having the new restriction.

Streets including Craigentinny Crescent have baffled motorists with one side of the road painted with a 20mph limit and the other side with a 30mph limit.

Some drivers have taken to social media to express their confusion, with one calling the situation "hilarious". Similar signs were spotted at the Leith Walk end of London Road.

The new speed limit will be phased in across six traffic zones, making Edinburgh Scotland's first 20mph city.

By January 2018, around 80% of Edinburgh streets will have a limit of 20mph, while some arterial routes will keep their 30mph and 40mph status.

It is hoped the move will create a more "people friendly" environment in the area's shopping and residential streets, with £100 fines and three penalty points for drivers caught speeding.

Lothian Buses has previously lodged objections with Edinburgh Council that the new limits could lead to higher fares and poorer services.

A council spokesman said the conflicting signs painted on Craigentinny Crescent referred to different limits depending on whether drivers were driving down the residential street or exiting on to Portobello Road.

He said: "The 30mph road marking signifies the speed limit on Portobello Road, on to which drivers exit.

"This will be reinforced by an adjacent road sign signalling the end of the 20mph zone, which will be erected before the 20mph limit comes into force in this area on February 28.

"The 20mph road marking refers to the 20mph speed limit on Craigentinny Crescent."
