The Forth Road Bridge has reopened after a lorry which overturned in high winds closed the road for four hours.

The lorry was on the northbound side of the bridge when its trailer toppled over at 2.45pm on Tuesday.

The bridge had to be closed in both directions to allow workers to right and remove the vehicle.

They brought in a heavy vehicle to shield the lorry from gusts of up to 58mph and loaded it with ballast before driving it off the bridge.

Authorities had closed the bridge to high-sided vehicles due to the high winds, with warning signs in place to advise drivers of the danger.

The bridge closure lead to tailbacks for drivers in surrounding areas.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: "Warning signs were in place prohibiting high-sided vehicles from crossing the bridge due to high winds.

"Inquiries are on-going into the full circumstances.

"Police are advising motorists to avoid the bridge and find an alternative route."

In January, the bridge was forced to close overnight after a lorry overturned and damaged railings across the central reservation.
