A large fire tore through the former Royal Victoria Hospital in Edinburgh.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service received a call at 4.17pm on Monday, with reports that a blaze had broken out.

Nine crews and pumping appliances attended with more than 60 firefighters tackling the flames which had engulfed the structure.

They battled through the night to bring the flames under control, damping down the building on Tuesday morning.

The hospital was closed in 2012 when a new unit opened at the Western General Hospital.

A fire service spokeswoman said: "Over 60 firefighters, nine fire appliances, one height vehicle and two water carriers were mobilised to the scene.

"Firefighters fought the blaze externally to bring it under control.

"There were no casualties."
