A pregnant woman was wrongly told she had miscarried by a doctor at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

She was in the final days of her pregnancy when she began to bleed and was taken to hospital by her husband.

A doctor told her a miscarriage was the likely cause and offered to carry out a scan the next morning which could confirm his diagnosis.

The scan found the bleeding had been caused by a haematoma - an accumulation of blood outside blood vessels - and the baby was unharmed.

The woman's husband complained the couple had faced an "unnecessary wait" to find this out.

NHS Lothian acknowledged there had been an "inappropriate diagnosis" and apologised.

The Scottish Public Services Ombudsman has made a series of recommendations to the health board, including speaking to the doctor involved.
