A fire has destroyed a block of flats above an Italian restaurant in Stirlingshire.

The fire broke out at around 6.20pm on Thursday over Ciro's on Main Street, Callander.

Firefighters tackled the blaze, which destroyed the building's roof, with high-power hoses.

Ciro's was not damaged by the fire but flooding and smoke damage has forced it to close.

A spokesman for the restaurant said in a statement: "My heart goes to all of people who lost the flats and even though Ciro's restaurant was OK, with flooding and smoke coming from above we will be closed for a long time."

A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokesman said: "We were called at 6.20pm on Thursday to a building fire in Callander.

"A total of six fire appliances were mobilised to the incident in Main Street and firefighters fought the fire externally with powerful water jets. There were no casualties.

"Firefighters remain on scene damping down and ensuring the area is made safe."
