A cyclist has died after getting stuck in tram tracks and being run over by an Edinburgh tour bus.

The woman fell from her bike outside House of Fraser on Princes Street after its wheels jammed in the rails on Wednesday morning.

The 24-year-old was then run over by a Rabbie's Tours bus, leaving her trapped beneath its wheels.

Witnesses reported seeing off-duty doctors stopping to help the woman, who later died at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "A woman has died following a collision in the city centre.

"The 24-year-old was cycling at the West End of Princes Street at around 8.30am on Wednesday when she came off her bike at the junction with Lothian Road, before being involved in a collision with a mini-bus.

"She sustained serious injuries and was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh where she sadly passed away."

The west end of Princes Street was shut for several hours following the collision.

Sergeant Fraser Wood added: "Our sympathies are with the woman's family and friends at this time.

"As part of our ongoing investigation we remain keen to speak to members of the public who witnessed this incident, or who have information that can assist us in establishing the full circumstances of what happened."

A spokesman for bus operator Rabbie's Tours said: "We are deeply saddened by the news and our thoughts and sympathies are with the woman's family and friends.

"We are giving our full assistance to police officers investigating the incident. We are also supporting our colleague involved in the incident, who is extremely shaken and upset."

An Edinburgh City Council spokesman added: "We were very saddened to hear of the tragic accident in the city centre. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the young woman.

"At this time, we cannot speculate on the circumstances of the accident but we will work with Police Scotland as they continue their investigations."
