Five British men who were at Benidorm holiday apartment when a Scots woman died have been placed under formal investigation by a Spanish judge.

Newlywed Kirsty Maxwell died after falling from a tenth floor window on April 29 in the popular tourist area in the south east of Spain.

The 27-year-old from Livingston, West Lothian, was part of a group of more than 20 women who had travelled to the resort for a hen weekend.

It is understood she had entered a room at Apartmentos Payma.

A British man, aged 32, was initially arrested by Spanish police but was understood to have returned to the UK.

Authorities in Spain did not charge him but he has remained under investigation. It is not yet known if he is one of the five men who have been requested to return for questioning.

Police were also understood to be probing the theory she may have been trying to flee the room she had entered.

Husband Adam, who she had only married in September, paid tribute to Kirsty in a post to a crowdfunding page set up to bring her home which has raised more than £33,000 so far.
