CCTV images have been released of a man police want to speak to following a "vicious" assault left another man needing surgery.

A 20-year-old man, who was on a night out, was attacked on George Street in Edinburgh on March 5 at 2.45am.

He suffered a significant facial injury during the assault, police said.

Detectives say the man in the CCTV may be able to help with their investigation and have asked anyone who recognises him to come forward.

He is described as being white, in his 20s and is around 6ft with a slim, athletic build. He was wearing a dark jumper with an orange stripe on the front.

The man police are seeking was in the company of three other men at the time.

Detective constable Narelle Allan, of Gayfield CID, said: "The victim was on a night out when he was attacked in a vicious manner which resulted in a painful and serious facial injury that required surgery.

"Police have been conducting enquiries including viewing CCTV from a nearby business premises.

"The man shown in the images is believed to be significant to our investigation and anyone who can identify him is asked to come forward.

"Similarly, we would ask that he get in touch with police himself in order to assist with the investigation"
