An elderly woman died after a bus driver was forced to stop suddenly in Edinburgh.

A car pulled out in front of the number 35 bus as it was travelling towards the city centre on Stenhouse Road at 1.15pm on Friday.

This caused the bus driver to brake sharply, injuring three passengers who were sitting on board.

As well as the 86-year-old woman, an 86-year-old man and a woman in her 30s were hurt in the incident. The elderly woman died in hospital the following day.

Police said the car involved was a white Audi Q3 or Q5 and officers are now trying to trace its driver. The incident took place opposite HMP Edinburgh.

Sergeant Fraser Wood, of the Edinburgh road policing unit, said: "Sadly a woman has died as a result of the evasive action the bus driver had to take to avoid the car.

"We would like to trace the driver of the car and any witnesses to the incident on Friday."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Edinburgh Road Policing Unit on 101 quoting incident number 1598 of June 9.
