Cyclist and children's author Sir Chris Hoy, tennis coach Judy Murray and broadcaster Jeremy Paxman will be among around 1000 people taking part in the Edinburgh Book Festival.

This year's line-up features writers from more than 50 different countries in the worlds of politics, sport and journalism among others.

The festival is suitable for all ages, with more than 800 events including writing workshops and two bookshops, one specifically for children.

For the first time, the annual event in August will expand from Charlotte Square into George Street.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon will be among the other guests.

Edinburgh International Book Festival director Nick Barley said: "Seventy years on from the first Edinburgh Festival, the need for artists and performers to come together in celebration of free speech and the power of creativity is as great as it has ever been.

"Against a backdrop of political earthquakes, this year's book festival proudly presents an awe-inspiring international array of writers who are closely observing the changing world and - to paraphrase the poet Emily Dickinson - telling it slant."
