Three women have been rescued by firefighters after a blaze broke out in a flat in Edinburgh.

Fire crews were called to Forrest Road at 12.10am on Tuesday after a fire started in a first-floor flat.

The three women were led to safety from the five-storey tenement block, and passed into the care of ambulance crews.

A spokesman for the fire service said: "Crews used breathing apparatus and high pressure hose reels to extinguish the fire."

An investigation is now under way into the cause of the blaze.
