An appeal has been launched to trace the rightful owners of a First World War campaign medal found lying by the roadside in Midlothian.

The century-old Victory medal, given to all who served in the 1914-18 war, was found near Loanstone Cottages in Auchendinny, Midlothian, on Saturday.

An inscription on the edge reveals it was awarded to one Private H. May, and it bears the number 02 15 16.

On the front of the medal is the winged image of Victory and on the back is the inscription, "The Great War For Civilisation 1914 -1919".

Police Scotland said the medal "will hold a significant importance to someone, and it would be a great privilege to return this to the recipient or their family".

Anyone with information can contact police on 101, quoting incident number 2224 of June 17.
