Thousands of passengers were hit by travel delays after Edinburgh Airport suffered a major power cut.

The terminal building was plunged into darkness around 9am on Wednesday, leaving travellers in near-pitch black conditions.

There were lengthy queues outside the check-in area and some passengers were left stuck on planes after landing.

Power began to be restored to the building around 10am.

The airport has said delays are expected to continue throughout Wednesday as staff work to clear the backlog.

Edinburgh Airport is Scotland's busiest and handled 12.3 million passengers last year.

Passengers spoke of their frustration at the delays.

Stewart Sinclair, who is travelling to Birmingham, said: "They might as well give us no information at all other than tell us they're already dealing with it. You'd like to think that was happening automatically anyway.

"It would be better if they gave us some idea of what was happening, I'd feel less frustrated I think."

Mhairi Rodger, who is travelling to Ibiza, said: "We were hoping to be there for 3pm but we'll be lucky to be there for 10pm at this rate.

"We've been in this queue for two hours."

A spokesman for the airport said: "We can confirm that power is now returning to the terminal and that flights have resumed.

"We're working to allow passengers to continue their journeys in a safe and ordered manner and we thank passengers for their patience whilst we do this.

"As always, the safety of passengers and staff is our priority.

"We expect there to be further delays whilst we clear the backlog."

The UK's air traffic control service, NATS, said the airport's control tower was not affected by the power cut.
