Canada's prime minister Justin Trudeau will visit Edinburgh next week, it has been announced.

Trudeau, who came to power in 2015, will meet the Queen at Holyrood Palace on Wednesday.

He is visiting the UK and Ireland ahead of the G20 summit of world leaders on next Thursday and Friday.

His official spokesman said the visit would "serve to recognise the strong family ties, history, and common purpose our countries share".

Trudeau, who is the leader of Canada's Liberal Party, said the visit would honour the Queen's commitment to Canada as a member of the Commonwealth.

He said: "Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's commitment to public service has long inspired me and many other Canadians.

"With this year marking the 150th anniversary of Confederation, I look forward to thanking her personally for her dedication to our country, and for carrying out her duties with such grace and strength."

Trudeau is 45 years old, making him Canada's second-youngest premier. The youngest, Joe Clark, became premier the day before his 40th birthday in 1979.

Almost five million Canadians have claimed to have a Scottish ancestry, with the UK being the ninth-largest source of new permanent residents arriving in Canada in 2015.
