A person has died after being hit by a train on the Borders Railway, causing major delays.

The incident happened at Glenesk Viaduct between Newcraighall in Edinburgh and Newtongrange, Midlothian, just before noon on Monday.

The line has been closed and a variety of services have been suspended.

Replacement transport has been arranged for the affected routes.

Disruption is expected to last until 2pm.

A British Transport Police spokesman said: "We attended along with colleagues from the Scottish Ambulance Service but sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Officers are now working to identify the person and inform their family.

"The incident is not currently being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the Procurator Fiscal."
