Dozens of trains between Edinburgh and Fife have been cancelled after signalling cables were stolen.

Along with the 32 cancellations, a reduced service is running between Glenrothes with Thornton via Cowdenbeath.

The line has to be closed to enable engineers to fix the signalling fault.

A ScotRail statement said: "Our staff identified that the cause of the signalling fault is due to the theft of signalling cables. It will take staff a few hours to repair the damage.

"Valid train tickets can be used of Stagecoach East between Dundee and Inverkeithing, including stations in Dunfermline and Kirkcaldy.

"A limited bus replacement service is in place. Thank you for your patience and we're sorry if your travel has been affected today."
