A newly erected flagpole on top of Edinburgh Castle has snapped in high winds.

The 90ft pole was seen bent over and dangling from one of the castle's tallest towers on Monday morning as winds of up to 70mph battered Scotland.

It had only been placed at the top of the castle recently, with scaffolding coming down a few weeks ago.

The flagpole is managed by the Ministry of Defence, which installed it after damage to the flag-raising mechanism was discovered.

An army spokeswoman said efforts were under way to repair it.

The upper section of the castle was closed on Monday morning due to the high winds.
