An 86-year-old woman died after her car crashed into a field in the Borders, police have said.

The elderly woman was driving north on the A701 at Blyth Bridge when the crash took place around 11.50am on Wednesday.

Her silver Honda Jazz left the road and overturned before coming to a stop in a field.

The 86-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene and an 84-year-old woman who was her passenger suffered minor injuries.

Constable Paul Gibson, of the road policing unit, said: "Our condolences go to woman's family and our thoughts remain with them, as well as her friend and passenger, at this sad time.

"As part of our investigation into this, we'd urge anyone who may have witnessed the car leave the road or who saw the car travelling in the area beforehand to get in touch with us."
