A 50-year-old woman has been seriously injured after she was hit by a car in the Scottish Borders.

The pedestrian was struck by a Mercedes A150 car on the A72 around 11am on Monday.

Police said the incident took place just south of Walkerburn, between Peebles and Galashiels.

The woman is being treated at the scene, police said.

Officers closed the road between Clevenfords and the Nest roundabout as they carried out their investigation.

Inspector Calum Welsh said: "We are still trying to establish the full circumstances surrounding this collision and would urge anyone with information to contact us immediately.

"Anyone planning to travel via the A72 is urged to take a different route while officers and other emergency services are in attendance."
