A man was struck in the head by debris blown from the roof of a building as he stood at a bus stop.

Jack Dunbar was at the bus stop on Nicolson Street, Edinburgh, when coating from chimneys on nearby flats fell down around 6.30am on Tuesday morning.

The incident took place as Storm Ophelia battered Scotland with winds of up to 70mph.

Edinburgh City Council said it has inspected a privately-owned building and written to its owners.

Mr Dunbar, a former soldier, said he was left with a cut and a lump on his head after the incident but got his bus into work shortly afterwards.

He told STV News: "It all happened so fast. A slate or something fell from the roof and made a big bang.

"It hit me on the head, one guy took out his phone to help me check my head."

A spokeswoman for Edinburgh City Council said inspectors had visited the site and found it was safe despite the fall.

The council has written to the building's owners to emphasise their responsibilities to keep it safe.
