A knitting group has decorated their local church with a display of more than 6000 hand-knitted poppies.

The 40ft-long artwork was installed outside Aberlady Parish Church in East Lothian this week.

Aberlady Craft Group decided to create the cascade of poppies ahead of Remembrance Day next month, with friends contributing poppies from around the world.

It was inspired by the poppy installation placed outside the Tower of London in 2014 to commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War.

The knitting group is seeking donations to veterans charity Poppy Scotland.

Anne Frost, who is part of the craft group, said: "One of our members wanted to support Poppy Scotland.

"We started in February this year and the enthusiasm has gone worldwide.

"The group have worked tirelessly sewing these on, it's taken a lot of time."

Rev Brian Hilsley, minister of Aberlady Parish Church, said: "On behalf of all at the Kirk, I would like to express admiration of and warm appreciation for the outstanding efforts of the Aberlady Craft Group in bringing this imaginative project to fulfilment.

"Our commemorations have special significance during the years 2014 to 2018 as we mark the 100th anniversary of the First World War.

"This installation is a magnificent tribute to all those who lost their lives in that conflict and since then.

"I pray that it will bring blessing to many and bear fruit in encouraging us all in the commitment to peace."
