Vandals have covered a First World War memorial with spray paint just two days before remembrance Sunday.

The column near Abercromby Primary School in Tullibody, Clackmannanshire, was seen covered in blue paint on Friday morning.

The council has been informed and work is under way to clean up the site.

Police said they were following a positive line of inquiry.

Chief superintendent Thom McLoughlin said: "This is a hugely disrespectful act which we understand will cause upset to the local community and we are treating this incident with the utmost seriousness.

"We would urge anyone who may have seen suspicious behaviour in this area recently, or has any information about this incident which may be able to help, to get in touch as soon as possible.

"Our enquiries continue and there will be an increase in patrols in the area over the coming weekend, however, I want to reassure the public that we are currently following a positive line of enquiry in connection with this."

Anyone with information has been asked to contact Alloa Police Station via 101.
