A pedestrian is fighting for his life after being hit by a car in Edinburgh.

Hill Place in Newington has been cordoned off following the incident at 10.35am on Wednesday.

A man in his 60s has been taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary in a critical condition.

Paramedics were forced to stop on Hill Place after the pedestrian's condition deteriorated following the incident on Inverleith Row.

Another man, who was driving the car, has also been taken to hospital.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "Local road closures remain in place and the public are asked to avoid the area if possible."

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesman added: "We dispatched two ambulances, a paramedic response unit, the medic one medical team and a manager.

"The first unit arrived on scene within two minutes."
