A man armed himself with a sword after being angered by football fans leaving a match between Hearts and Celtic.

James Joseph McGreevy, 34, from Glasgow was enraged Hearts supporters were making derogatory remarks about Celtic fans and religion.

McGreevy, who watched the match on TV in a flat near Tynecastle in Edinburgh, went into the street armed with an 11-inch gold-handled sword and an eight-and-a-half inch blade.

He was jailed for 15 months at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Tuesday after admitting being in possession of the weapons on April 2 last year.

Prosecutor Rachel Adey described McGreevy as having been unsteady on his feet, provoked by the fans and becoming very emotional.

Defence solicitor Jennifer Cameron said her client had mental health difficulties and drug addiction.

She added that his recollection of the incident was "rather vague".
