Edinburgh's iconic Caledonian hotel has been bought by a Middle East investment firm for £85m.

Abu Dhabi-based Twenty14 Holdings says it intends to invest another £20m in the five-star Princes Street hotel.

It plans to add 50 new rooms to the Caledonian and refurbish its existing rooms.

The deal follows the recent sales of The Scotsman Hotel and The Bonham in Edinburgh.

Twenty14 managing director Adeeb Ahamed said: "We are honoured to be part of this Scottish landmark that has a great significance for locals and visitors alike.

"We look forward to adding to the experience the Caledonian already offers."

The Caledonian, which is part of the Hilton's Waldorf Astoria brand, opened in 1903. It underwent a £24m renovation in 2012.

Twenty14 Holdings was founded in 2014 and has reportedly invested more than £470m in property across the UK, the Middle East and India.
