Concern is growing for a Finnish tourist who has been missing in Edinburgh for a week.

The family of Riina Elisabeth Sjogren say she appeared "withdrawn and insular" before she disappeared.

The 38-year-old's family told police they did not know she was planning on travelling to Scotland when they last saw her in Helsinki over Christmas.

They said she was not her usual self and was quite quiet.

Ms Sjogren, who works as a teacher, left Edinburgh Airport around 8.50pm on Tuesday, January 9 after buying a plane ticket she did not use and abandoning her belongings.

She was last seen at York Place tram stop around 10.20pm after leaving the airport.

Police are now checking CCTV in a bid to trace her movements.

The local area commander for north-west Edinburgh, chief inspector Stephen Sutherland, said: "It has now been a week since Riina was last seen and I am eager to hear from anyone who has seen her since this time.

"We know she alighted the tram at York Place from the airport at around 10.20pm last Tuesday but since then she has not been in contact with family or friends.

"I would ask anyone who has seen Riina, or who knows of her whereabouts, to contact us immediately."

Ms Sjogren is described as white, 5ft 3in tall, of medium build with shoulder-length dark brown hair and wearing glasses.

Police believe she visited Edinburgh Castle on the evening of Monday, January 8.

Anyone with information has been asked to contact police via 101, quoting incident number 3748 of January 9.
