An 11-year-old girl is in a serious condition in hospital after she was struck by a car in East Lothian.

The child was injured on Haddington Road, Tranent, around 3.50pm on Thursday.

Police said she was hit by a BMW 120 car which had been travelling east near the Aldi supermarket.

The girl was taken to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh where staff described her condition as serious.

Officers have appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

Sergeant Neil Inglis said: "The driver stopped as soon as the incident occurred and is continuing to assist with our investigation, but we are also keen to hear from other members of the public who witnessed what happened.

"If you were on Haddington Road on Thursday afternoon and believe you have information relevant to this inquiry then please contact police immediately."
