A police helicopter and 80 officers spent nearly four hours searching for a teenager who escaped from custody.

Conlan Carr pushed a security guard out the way before breaking free of handcuffs at a police station in Edinburgh.

He was there to take part in an identity parade after being transferred from Polmont Young Offenders Institute, where he was being held on remand.

Carr, who was 19-years-old at the time, was sentenced to a year's detention on Thursday after previously admitting intending to defeat the ends of justice by escaping from custody on December 12 last year.

Edinburgh Sheriff Court heard that he arrived at St Leonards Police Station at 8am and by 10.30am was ready to return to Polmont.

Carr, now 20, was placed in handcuffs on his right wrist and taken out the back door of the station to where a G4S security van was parked.

"The accused was asked to step up into the van " said prosecutor Lorna Ferrier. "He put his right foot on the bottom step and grabbed his right wrist with his left hand. He nudged the officer out of the way, forced his right hand free of the cuffs and ran away."

Ms Ferrier said the officer gave chase, but was unsuccessful in catching him.

This led to an extensive search of the area, which includes Arthur's Seat and Holyrood Park, with a police helicopter and 80 officers involved in the hunt before he was found at 2.20pm.

Defence solicitor advocate, David Allan, told Sheriff Braid that his client's actions had been "impulsive and extremely stupid".
