A man has been seriously injured after being attacked near a pharmacy.

The assault happened on Clerk Street in Newington, Edinburgh, shortly before 2.15pm on Tuesday.

Officers cordoned off the street near Newington Pharmacy while investigations were carried out.

The man, who is in his 20s, is in a serious condition in hospital.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "Police in Edinburgh were called to Clerk Street at around 2:20pm on Tuesday following reports of an assault.

"A man in his 20s was taken to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary with serious head injuries."

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokeswoman added: "We dispatched one ambulance to the scene."
