A teacher who discussed his sexual encounters and drug addiction in front of pupils has been struck off.

Peter Walsh engaged in inappropriate conversations with pupils at Broughton High School in Edinburgh in February 2015.

The English teacher also left a class early, distracted pupils during their lessons and referred to colleagues as not having a "f***ing clue".

A hearing of the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) found a series of charges against Mr Walsh proved.

He had conducted his own defence at the hearing in Edinburgh, but was excluded from the building after he made "aggressive and intimidating" statements towards witnesses, repeatedly sighed and "pulled faces" on the first day of proceedings.

The hearing was told Mr Walsh had been a supply teacher at the school.

Another teacher told the GTCS panel that S3 pupils had reported Mr Walsh using bad language and talking about his addiction to drugs.

The witness said a group of S4 pupils had also reported Mr Walsh's behaviour to her.

The pupils reportedly said he "had told them to stop what they were doing to listen to him whilst he described having sex behind a tree and other sexual encounters, smoking joints and going to rehab."

He was also heard to say that "most English teachers are crap but it's not their fault because they were taught by crap English teachers".

Mr Walsh also referred to drawings made by pupils as looking like "testes."

The GTCS panel ruled that Mr Walsh was unfit to teach and struck his name from the register.

The panel said: "The panel considered that there may be occasions when it may be appropriate for a teacher to discuss sex or drugs with pupils or to make use of examples from his or her personal life.

"However, [Mr Walsh] was a supply teacher who was charged with following specific lesson plans for each class and the nature of the matters discussed and the language used was entirely inappropriate in any event.

"The panel had no doubt that the [Mr Walsh's] conduct in using inappropriate and offensive language, leaving a class before the end and failing to follow lesson plans would call into question the Teacher's fitness to teach."

The panel noted he had also failed to treat colleagues with respect and failed to show any remorse for his actions.
