A motorcyclist is fighting for his life after a crash on the Edinburgh city bypass.

The smash happened heading westbound between the Straiton and Lothianburn junctions at 3.50pm on Wednesday.

A Ford Transit collided with a Volkswagen Caddy van, forcing it into the central reservation before it smashed into a Honda motorcycle.

The 60-year-old motorcyclist is in a critical condition at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

A man, 42, who was driving the Volkswagen, suffered minor injuries while the driver of the Ford Transit was uninjured.

The road was closed for almost seven hours while investigations were carried out.

Sergeant Fraser Wood said: "This collision has resulted in the motorcyclist sustaining very serious injuries and we are continuing with our efforts to establish the full circumstances of the incident.

"I would ask other motorists who were on the bypass at the time, and witnessed what happened, to contact police immediately.

"We would also be keen to obtain any dash-cam footage from vehicles that were in the area of the collision and if you believe you have any then please also get in touch."

Anyone with information is asked to contact 101.
