Residents in Fife were told to keep their doors and windows closed after a large fire broke out at a scrapyard.

The blaze was reported at a site on Montgomery Road, Leven around 4.50am on Wednesday.

A column of black smoke could be seen coming from the scrapyard.

The fire service said the blaze was brought under control by 6am.

An investigation has been launched to determine what started the fire.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "Local residents were advised to keep their doors and windows closed due to the volume of smoke.

"Officers remain in attendance and a joint investigation will be conducted with the Scottish Fire & Rescue Service to establish the cause of this."
