A driver has died after a car smashed into a railway bridge.

Emergency services were called to A921 Kinghorn road near Kirkcaldy in Fife at 7am on Wednesday.

A 49-year-old man, who was driving a Volkswagen Polo which was travelling north, was taken to hospital but died shortly after.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "The road is currently closed at the junction with the B923 and the public are advised to avoid the area, where possible.

"Anyone who witnessed the collision or has any information to help with ongoing inquiries is asked to contact 101."
