Tributes have been paid to a teenager who died after a fishing boat capsized.

Thomas Weir, originally of Edinburgh, died with relative Gerry Doherty after their vessel sank off Malin Head in County Donegal, Ireland.

The 16-year-old was pronounced dead in hospital shortly after being airlifted following the incident at 9am on Tuesday.

Mr Doherty, from County Donegal, was found dead on the shore.

Holidaymakers raised the alarm and called the coastguard after hearing shouts from the water.

A third man, in his 50s, was rescued after being found clinging to a buoy. He has since been discharged from hospital.

It is understood there are family connections between the three.

Tributes have been paid to the pair on social media.

Abbi Diamond said: "RIP Thomas Weir, can't believe what I've just been told, taken far too soon. Honestly such a sin.

"My love goes to all family and friends."

A Dooagh Pipe Band spokesman said: "Dooagh pipe band wish to express our deepest condolences to the Weir, Gielty and Doherty families following the tragic deaths of Thomas Weir and Gerry Doherty in Donegal.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time. May they rest in peace."

An Achill Tourism spokesman added: "Due to the drowning tragedy in Donegal and the deaths of Thomas Weir and Gerry Doherty, both of whom have strong Achill connections, the Purteen Harbour Festival on Saturday and the RNLI Open Day on Sunday have been postponed to a later date as a mark of respect."
