A man has been charged with assaulting another man who died on a street in Edinburgh days later.

The 51-year-old man was found unconscious at the junction between Montgomery Place and Brunswick Road in the early hours of Friday.

He was treated at the scene but was pronounced dead by paramedics.

Police continue to treat his death as unexplained, but a 44-year-old man has been charged with assaulting the deceased in the days before his death.

Officers say they are still trying to establish the full circumstances of the 51-year-old man's death.

An area of the street remained cordoned off on Wednesday.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "The death is currently being treated as unexplained and inquiries are continuing to establish the full circumstances, which include police activity in the area.

"A 44-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection with an assault on the deceased in the days prior to his death."
