A man and a woman have been assaulted with a metal pole in a street attack.

The incident happened on Mayfield Drive in Armadale, West Lothian, at 2.30am on Monday.

A 41-year-old man and a woman, 32, were targeted by a man armed with a metal pole.

The attacker then made off in a silver van.

The man sustained injuries to his arms and is being treated at St John's Hospital in Livingstone while the woman was uninjured.

Following the attack, the man discovered his keys had been stolen but his vehicle hadn't been taken.

The attacker is white, in his early 50s and is 5ft 10in. He is slim, has short grey hair and was wearing a dark top.

Constable Lynn Myles said: "At this time we don't know if the keys were stolen opportunistically, or whether the intention of this attack was to steal the vehicle.

"We are continuing to conduct local inquiries in the area to identify the suspect and anyone who recognises him should contact police immediately.

"In addition, anyone with any further information relevant to this investigation should also get in touch."
