A man is in a coma after his genitals were ripped off by a dog.

The attack happened at a flat on the High Street in Haddington, East Lothian.

STV News understands a 22-year-old man was sitting in the home with friends when an Olde English Bulldog hauled off his genitals.

The man was left unconscious in a pool of blood following the attack at 2.30pm on Sunday.

He has been placed in an induced coma and is in a serious but stable condition in hospital.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "Police in East Lothian are investigating after a man suffered serious injuries, believed to have been caused by a dog, in Haddington on Sunday.

"Emergency services were called to a property in the High Street area at around 2.30pm.

"A 22-year-old man was taken to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary by the Scottish Ambulance Service, and later transferred to the Western General Hospital where he remains receiving treatment.

"Enquiries into the full circumstances are ongoing."
