A violent rapist who brutally attacked a former army medic has been jailed for six years.

Stephen Graham, who has already served time in prison for domestic violence, repeatedly punched the woman and tried to stab her with a knife after threatening to kill her.

Graham, 29, from Glenrothes, Fife, had previously assaulted the woman just weeks before he launched the rape attack on February 25.

The 29-year-old victim, who waived her right to anonymity, served in the army for seven years as a medic on the front line, saving lives in Afghanistan twice.

Carin, who did not want to reveal her surname, said: "I have been through a lot and seen a lot, but I was trained for that.

"After this happened I was stripped to the bone. I had nothing left.

"If someone handed me a pill to end it all, I would have."

The victim claimed Graham became jealous during their relationship and did not want her to have male friends - even on social media.

During an attack in January, Graham pushed her to the ground and repeatedly punched her.

Following the rape weeks later, the victim turned up at her grandmother's house crying hysterically with blood on her face.

Graham had earlier denied raping the woman, but was convicted of the sex attack along with a further assault on the victim.

He was also found guilty shouting, swearing and challenging police officers to fight at Levenmouth police station in Fife on September 22, 2017.

Defence lawyer Chris Fyffe told the High Court in Edinburgh: "It is recognised by him that a custodial sentence is inevitable in this particular case."

Mr Fyfe said that Graham maintained his position at trial that there was no sex on the day of the rape but acknowledged that DNA evidence was "a significant aspect of the Crown case".

Graham was jailed for a total of six years and one month by judge Lord Summers and was placed on the Sex Offenders' Register.
