A dog who ripped off a man's genitals leaving him in a coma has been put down.

The attack happened at a flat on the High Street in Haddington, East Lothian.

A 22-year-old man was sitting in a flat with friends when an Olde English Bulldog hauled off his genitals.

The man was left unconscious in a pool of blood and was in a coma in hospital.

Officers have now said the dog has been put down following the attack on Sunday, October 7.

The victim is now out of a coma and is receiving surgery.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "Enquiries are continuing to establish the full circumstances of how a 22-year-old man sustained significant injury to his groin area while within an address in Haddington on Sunday, October 7.

"However, as part of this investigation, the owner of the dog which is believed to have been involved has voluntarily signed documentation consenting to the destruction of the animal.

"This has now taken place after protracted dialogue between the Crown Office, Scottish SPCA and the East Lothian council dog warden."
