A fire has ripped through an old primary school in Fife.

Emergency services were called to the former Inverkeithing Primary School at 9.20pm on Monday.

Around 40 firefighters are tackling the flames, which can be seen for miles.

Surrounding streets have been closed and residents have been asked to close their windows.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "Police are currently assisting the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service at Roods Road, Inverkeithing, due to an ongoing fire at the old primary school.

"Please close your windows if you live near to the area.

"Do not approach the surrounding streets to allow the fire service access to the building."

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) spokesman added: "The SFRS is currently in attendance at a well-developed building fire in Inverkeithing.

"Operations control mobilised a number of fire engines at a derelict building after a call came in at 9.20pm."
