Teachers who were sent home from an Edinburgh school without pay for refusing to teach "violent" pupils have returned to work after discussions by the council and union bosses.

As reported by STV News in October, 11 staff members at Kaimes School in Liberton were not willing to provide lessons to eight additional needs pupils over physical and verbal assaults.

It was claimed the teachers, who are all members of trade union NASUWT, had been treated in hospital with injuries including broken bones and concussion.

A solution has now been reached - almost three weeks after the dispute started.

The City of Edinburgh Council and NASUWT released a joint statement, claiming a "range of actions" had been agreed to enhance conditions for the teachers and pupils.

They stated: "The well-being of staff and pupils has been at the heart of the discussions and both parties have agreed that a zero tolerance approach to any incident involving violence against staff is paramount to ensure the safety and protection of staff at all times.

"In the light of the good progress made, the NASUWT members have now returned to work."

The situation will continue to be monitored, with a review scheduled for December.

They added: "Both parties agree that the staff and pupils at Kaimes School now need space and stability to enable them to move forward positively."
