A woman trapped in a car hanging over a bridge in the Scottish Borders had to be cut free by firefighters.

The fire service were alerted on Saturday evening to a report of a car hanging over Bow Bridge near Melrose, with a person stuck inside.

Crews from Galashiels and Kelso were sent to the scene on the A699 at 7.51pm and used specialised equipment to stabilise the car before cutting the injured woman free.

A spokeswoman for the Scottish Fire & Rescue Service said: "Crews used two tirfor winches to stabilise the vehicle and hydraulic cutting gear to extricate one 69-year-old woman who was physically trapped."

The woman was taken to Borders General Hospital for treatment to her injuries.

The fire service said no one else was in the car.

Police said inquiries into the incident are ongoing.
