A man has been arrested after allegedly attacking two people in a cemetery before breaking into an elderly couple's home in the Borders.

The 27-year-old is also said to have attempted to steal a car from a property in Kelso over the weekend.

The first incident took place at around 9.30pm on Friday when two 31-year-old men were allegedly assaulted at the Rosebank Cemetery in Shedden Park Road.

One man sustained injuries to his head and back, while the other suffered a hand injury.

On Saturday afternoon an elderly couple were within their home in Abootseat when a man is said to have forced entry, causing the pair fear and alarm.

An alleged attempt was then made to steal a car from a neighbouring property.

Police said a 27-year-old was arrested and subsequently charged in connection with the incidents.

He is scheduled to appear at Selkirk Sheriff Court on Monday.

Detective sergeant Callum Peoples said: "I want to make it clear that these sort of incidents are totally unacceptable and left various members of the Kelso community either injured, or very distressed.

"Tackling violence, antisocial behaviour and acquisitive crime are our top priorities within the Borders and whenever such offences are reported to us, we will investigate thoroughly and professionally to bring anyone found to be responsible to justice."
